This recipe makes a small batch of delicious onion rings are spicy, super crispy and full of flavour. They’re perfect as a finger food or for a quick snack and once you try these onion rings, you will never buy onion rings from the shops again.
Since learning how to make onion rings at home, they have now become a favourite in my house. This recipe makes crispy onion rings that taste like onions rings you would eat at a restaurant. They are lightly seasoned and the spiciness comes from using cayenne pepper and crushed chillies which gives them a great flavour.
These onions rings are so quick and easy to prepare and definitely much easier than many people think. They are very versatile and you can serve them as an appetiser or a side. You can also serve them as a party food for sharing.
Ingredients for Spicy Crispy Onion Rings

- Onion – use a large brown onion.
- Flour – I use plain flour for this recipe.
- Cornflour – also known as cornstarch.
- Seasonings - use salt, black pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper and crushed chillies to flavour the onion rings.
- Water – I use sparkling water.
- Breadcrumbs – panko breadcrumbs are ideal.
- Oil – use any oil you prefer. I use sunflower oil.
How to Make Spicy Crispy Onion Rings
1. Peel and carefully slice the onion into rings. Separate the rings and set them aside. In a small bowl, combine the flour, cornflour, salt, black pepper paprika, cayenne pepper and crushed chilies. Gradually add the water and mix until smooth then set aside and pour the panko breadcrumbs into a separate bowl.
2. Dip one onion ring into the batter ensuring it gets fully coated. Allow any excess batter to dip off then dip the onion ring into the panko breadcrumbs and fully coat by turning it a few times in the breadcrumbs. Place the coated ring on a plate and repeat the process until all the onion rings are coated. Allow all the coated the onion rings to sit at room temperature for 20 minutes to allow the coating to fully set.
3. Pour the oil in heavy duty (enough to fully cover the onion rings and allow to heat to around 160oC. Place a few onion rings into the oil and cook for around 1 - 2 minutes turning half way through. The onion rings will be golden brown when done. Place the cooked onion rings onto a plate lined with kitchen towel. Repeat the process until all the onion rings are cooked. Serve them with your favourite sauce.
Recipe Tips
- This recipe makes a small batch of onion rings but you can easily double the recipe to make a larger batch.
- The centre rings may be too small to use. I usually store them in the fridge in an airtight container and I use them for cooking.

Storage
Ideally, make these onion rings to serve immediately. Store any leftover onion rings in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat when needed. Onion rings that are breaded but uncooked can be frozen for up to 2 months.
